Zach traded a seat in Aaron and Stacia’s Acadia for one in his Silverado while the others went inside to round up Jenna. The sun had long since set, leaving a muggy haze to ring the half moon above. Usually, he would have followed his friends inside, grateful to extend their time together and lessen the alone time awaiting him in his empty apartment. Tonight, he wanted to get back home and spend time with the person he’d been missing all evening.

Jenna.

How many times had he turned to share an amusing observation or update her on something that’d happened at the shop today, only to realize she wasn’t there? More than he could count, that was for sure. And though the party wasn’t her usual scene, the people in attendance not even part of a circle she ran in, it still felt odd not having her there.

He dragged a hand over his face, the last remnants of tonight’s cheap beer long gone. Already, he was letting Sofía and the others down. Maybe next time he’d volunteer to stay back with the twins, so she could go and be social. Or better yet, he’d take Jenna with him and let Aaron get a high school kid lined up to watch the boys.

He would have been a boring date tonight, though, spending most of his time off to the side letting Monte bounce ideas off him and Aaron. The guy was sharp, and he had some great ideas that would help him to stand out in the crowd amid the mainland shops. He was also persistent, spending half their time together trying to talk Zach into joining him on the journey. But Zach didn’t want to go anywhere, not when he had unfinished business on the island.

Personal business.

The side door swung open and Jenna appeared beneath the lamplight, hair a bit wilder and movements a little slower than when he’d seen her last. The lighting cast shadows under her eyes, exaggerating the fatigue that’d settled into her features, yet when she spied him in the driver’s seat of his truck, a smile dawned on her face.

It was the most beautiful sight he’d seen all night.

Jenna climbed into the truck, set her purse down, and settled into her seat, fighting a yawn. “How was the party?”

“Boring. How were things here?”

“Anything but.” A weary smile tugged at her lips. “We had a blast.”

“Awesome.”

Zach started his truck and backed out of Aaron’s drive onto the main road, green with envy. He was over the partying, the mingling, the search for that special someone. Heck, the closest thing he’d ever come to that was sitting an arm’s reach away. It’d just taken a broken sewer pipe to make him realize it.

“Was it really that boring?” she asked around another yawn.

“Oh, you know. The same old, same old. A bunch of people creeping up on thirty but trying to convince each other they’re still twenty.”

“Ah, yes. The clocks are ticking.” She chuckled. “Walk away with any hot dates lined up?”

“Uh, no.
